Ethical issues during cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Summary:
Introduction: A heart attack is the sudden loss of cardiac function, with subsequent cessation of respiratory function and loss of consciousness of the patient. Cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation often raise ethical concerns and dilemmas that health professionals are called upon to address and decide.
Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to explore in the recent literature the issues related to the moral dimension of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Method: A bibliography of the last decade (2010-2020) has been sought in the Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic and Pubmed databases, using the keywords: “ethics”, “bioethics”, “cardiopulmonary resuscitation”, “patients” and the corresponding Greek terms.
Results: Three studies, showed that the morale of each action, mainly medical, and in particular each process of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, depends on the condition of the patient. However, there is a need to change the way doctors are taught about this decision. An important factor is that of the patient's family environment, which participates in decisions and due to his lack of knowledge is not able to receive the most appropriate ones. Physicians, in addition to the family environment of patients, must learn to handle the emotions of these patients, as well as their relatives, as they are very important for the final decisions and play a decisive role in ethics.
Conclusions: Due to the lack of a diagnosis and the associated short-term and long-term prognosis after cardiopulmonary resuscitation, options in the face of certain ethical issues are limited. In order to evaluate each decision ethically, the doctor must have a good relationship with the patients.
