The role of self-esteem in aggressive behavior and the configuration of school climate in elementary students
Summary:
Self-esteem has proved to be an important subject of research about human behavior. The above shows that self-esteem is vital for mental well-being. Self-esteem is an individual subjective evaluation of their own worth and it encompasses feelings about oneself like self respect and appreciation. Experiences and environmental factors can affect someone’s self esteem. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between self-esteem and aggressive behavior in childhood and as a result the configuration of school climate. The study of self-esteem in childhood as a mediator factor of aggressive behavior and school climate may contribute to better understanding of everyday situations in school which can affect important aspects of school life like relationships, school behavior and school climate as a field of learning.
In this survey, a number of 90 students (43 boys, 47 girls) participated. From the overall participation, 51 students belong in the fifth grade of elementary school and 39 students belong in the sixth grade of elementary school. The participants completed three measuring tools: a) The Self-esteem Scale, b) the Classroom Life Measure and c) the Profile of Mood States. Specifically, the results of the research revealed that self-esteem is positively related to the majority of the factors of the Classroom Life Measure (teacher academic and personal support, student academic and personal support, cooperation). Furthermore, a positive correlation is found between self-esteem and gender. However, the results did not reveal statistically significant differences between self esteem and age or place of residence. The close relationship between self-esteem, school climate and mood states (anger, tension) was confirmed by the results of the above measuring tools. The findings are particularly important as they indicate the significance of high self-esteem as a nessecary factor of a positive school climate and students’ positive feelings at school.
