Exploring the relationship between school well-being and parenting in adolescent students
Summary:
Adolescence school well-being is a matter of priority of all the members of a school community, as it aims to the mental well-being of the participants of this community. According to Aldhafri’s research (2011), certain parenting styles have relation with children's school well-being. The present research is carried out in order to consider the concepts of school well-being and parenting, and examine the correlation between these two. In addition to this, this research deals with the importance of parenting in the life of adolescent students and the connection that coexists in both meanings. 310 teenage students of the first and second grade of high school participated in this research from schools in the greater region of Athens. The means which were used are: a) the questionnaire of school well-being which includes 8 questions and b) the EMBU-C questionnaire, for the second variant of parenting. The results which emerged out of the statistical analysis show that school well-being is meanly depended on the students’ school performance. Adolescents’ school well-being is related to maternal emotional warmth and paternal rejection. In terms of gender, girls reported slightly higher levels of school well-being, and the unemployment of both parents seemed to affect students' school well-being negatively. Variables such parents’ educational level and divorced parents are not related with the students' school well-being. The necessity of enhancing the school well-being of adolescent students through programs of prevention and intervention is under discussion.
