Integration of students with body disabilities and health problems in the school environment
Summary:
Introduction: Special Education is a specialized field of the educational system which aims to the development of methods that help to solve educational and teaching problems relevant to students with special educational needs. The current sociocultural changes, the notions about equal educational chances for all the students and the existing legislation, led to the institution of integration. Students with body disabilities and health problems can proceed their education in the school environment with the appropriate support of the multidisciplinary team and with the appropriate interventions, the students can be assimilated to the educational procedure.
Aim: The aim of this review is to critically evaluate the research bibliography, as far as the integration of students with body disabilities and health problems in the school environment are concerned.
Material and Methods: The electronic search was completed using the data bases Pubmed, Science Direct, IATROTEK and EBSCO in the time period from February, 1st 2020 to March, 2nd 2020. The number of the articles derived from the universal bibliography was 84 and the 11 of them fulfilled the selection requirements and were included in this research paper.
Results: The results of this research underline the need for improvement in the sanitary health care of the school environment in order to promote the participation of the students with body disabilities and health problems. The school nurse and the collaboration of the school nurse with the teachers of the school play an important role so as to cover the students' needs.
The educators have both a positive and negative attitude towards the integration. Although the educators know the importance of the integration, only few of them feel fully prepared and comfortable with the teaching of students with special needs. Significant differences among the educators who have degrees from different educational grades are observed and the training of the teachers also has an important role.
Based on the students' opinions about their classmates with body disabilities and health problems, the students usually show a negative behaviour to meaningfully communicate with a classmate with special needs. In Greece, the integration has been proven quite achievable as the main problem lies in the lack of supporting infrastructures and the difficulties in the collaboration of the included partners.
Conclusions: The review highlights the intense need for the school nurse in the school environment. Moreover, teachers should be trained on the subjects of health problems and lifelong health conditions and the cooperation between the multidisciplinary team and the parents has a positive effect on the student's progress. The better organization of the school premises and the consciousness raising of the classmates on topics about body disabilities and health problems, will enable the integration of the students with special needs. The rebuilding and reformation of the typical education are essential developments so that the school environment will be able to welcome the students with special needs. These changes will lead the students with special needs and health problems to smoothly coexist with the rest of the students.
