The visual representations of the figure of Harlequin from Commedia dell'Arte and its impact on Picasso's work
Summary:
As far as art is concerned, the 20th century was not only a long period of fermentation but also the springboard for influential movements of expression which had and are still having an impact on subsequent generations of artists. The greatest of the protagonists of 20th century art was undoubtedly Pablo Picasso. He was a genius of contemporary art who influenced and inspired whole generations thanks to his pioneering expression, who gave the world culture a substantial and extremely important artistic legacy.
The dissertation focused on the perception of the figure of Harlequin, this emblematic character of Italian folk theater, by the great Spanish painter. Simultaneously, it examined the overall impact of Commedia dell'Arte on his work throughout his artistic career, which incidentally coincided with his biological life insofar as he stopped painting only when he stopped breathing.
The study of his artistic works, in perfect agreement with the socio-political and historical context of each period and with the events that marked his life, brought to the surface very important elements that prove that the choice of the figure of Harlequin, as the great painter’s alter ego, was not an accidental one. Harlequin was adopted by Picasso as a transmitter of emotions and strong symbolic elements, as a means of personal expression which, in any difficult or significant situation, comes out fearlessly to the foreground and conveys it to the public.
