Summary:
In recent decades, the field of positive psychology has become increasingly interesting. Positive psychology is a modern branch in the field of mental health, initiated with the ultimate goal of shifting the research interest from the psychopathology of individuals and the causes that cause it, to the investigation of positive elements of the human entity, such as the strengths of the character of individuals and their positive feelings. In Greek reality, although there has been a wealth of research in a variety of fields in the light of positive psychology, such as education and work, however in the field of addictions research efforts are limited. This research gap, combined with the recognition of the importance of psychological components such as self-symptoms and mental resilience in the management of dependency problems and the resulting symptoms of anxiety and depression, have given rise to the need to conduct this research. Self-agreement is defined as a positive-warm attitude from self to self and consists of its three synthetic elements: self-kindness, versus self-criticism, shared human experience in the face of self-isolation and self-consciousness versus over-identification. On the other hand, mental resilience is defined as a positive adaptation to adversity or traumatic experiences and the possibility of recovering from them as soon as possible, without disrupting mental and/or physical health. The primary objective of this research is to investigate possible associations between the symptomatology of anxiety and depression, in relation to self-symptoms and mental resilience in people who are dependent on alcohol or substances, their comparison with people who are in the process of detoxification (abstinence) from alcohol or substances, as well as the comparison of the clinical sample with the general population. The survey involved 80 people, 40 of whom were dependent on alcohol or substances (active users) and 40 were abstinence from dependent substances, as well as 80 people in the general population, provided they did not have dependency problems. Questionnaires were provided for the collection of the data, including theSCSmeasurement scale, the Connor-Davidson mental resilience measurement scale (CD-RISC) HAD Sand the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Measurement (HADS) scale. The results showed statistical significance in terms of differences in self-symptoms and its synthetic elements, mental resilience, and synthetic elements, other than spirituality, anxiety and depression between users and non-users of alcohol or substances. Also, statistically significant were the differences between active users and the general population, with the former exhibiting lower levels of self-symptoms and mental resilience and higher levels of anxiety and depression. On the other hand, in terms of differences between people who abstained from alcohol or substances with the general population, statistical significance was found for self-symptoms, with higher levels for the dependents, and for depression, with lower levels of the same, compared to the general population, and showed no differences in stress and mental resilience. Finally, a positive association was found between self-compatibility and mental resilience, as well as a negative association between those with anxiety and depression, both in people who were dependent, and in those who abstained from alcohol or drugs.
