Students' views on the dangers of chemicals that go unnoticed in everyday life
Summary:
Many consumer products are used in a beneficial way for humans to meet their basic needs, although they contain dangerous chemicals that go unnoticed by the average citizen. The responsible use of these products requires quality training, valid information, and compliance with the relevant rules of proper use of Chemicals. Nevertheless, it is found that every year many accidents occur due to improper use of daily products which even lead to death. Students' attitudes towards safety are important as the way people act depends on what they believe. Most accidents occur either due to unsafe operations or due to the production of unsafe conditions. Thus, teachers should be aware of students' existing ideas, learning objectives and the difference between the two when planning and implementing their teaching.
In this study, an attempt was made to record and investigate the views and attitudes of students of High School (first grade) in 26 Lyceums throughout Greece, who recently graduated from the nine-year compulsory education, on the Danger of Chemicals and the Proper Management of Consumer Products encountered in everyday life.
The results of the research show that students are well aware that the consumer products they use in their daily lives can be dangerous to their health and they agree with the view that the correct use of a product reduces the possibility of negative effects on their health. The attitudes of the students towards the Proper Management of Chemicals are characterized as positive, although in the Curricula of High School and Lyceum Chemistry and in the respective books are included minimal objectives regarding the Danger of Chemicals and the Proper Management of Chemicals.
