The added value of Virtual Laboratories in achieving Deeper Learning in Natural Sciences
Summary:
This master's thesis studies extensively the impact of Virtual Labs on modern Deep Learning skills through research conducted on students aged 12 - 14. The term Deep Learning refers to a set of cognitive skills based on the following pillars: Mastering the subject in depth (Knowledge Academic mindset), Ability to work in groups (Collaboration), Learning “how to learn” through motivation and interest enhancement (Fascination), Ability to solve complex problems through critical thinking (Problem Solving).
The sample of the research consisted of 194 students of the 1st year of High school, “A Gymnasiou”, from different school units. For a period of 4 months the above students were taught topics of the curriculum using Virtual Labs. The electronic platform ISE (Inspiring Science Education platform), http://ise.iasa.gr/ was used as a working environment for students but also as a means of access to selected Virtual Labs. The pre-post testing method was used to assess the effect of the proposed intervention, by applying specific weighted questionnaires to record the skills that shape Deep Learning. The statistical analysis of the questionnaires was performed with the statistical program SPSS. In addition, the ISE electronic platform provides the ability to record students' problem-solving skills as it can record their successive choices in each phase of implementation of each experiment where the Virtual Lab is used.
The findings that have emerged and which are in complete agreement with the references, highlight the importance of the assessment tool –which is based entirely on the principles of inquiry learning– and in particular the Virtual Laboratory, in enhancing modern Deep Learning skills that were examined. More specifically, mainly through the Virtual Laboratory, during which students were asked to make assumptions, ask questions, organize their experiment, make observations and finally collect and analyze their data, there was a significant increase in their level of knowledge in topics under study, significant enhancement of teamwork and collaboration skills, enhancement of interest and enthusiasm for the Natural Sciences (Fascination for Science), development of critical and scientific thinking, and finally enhancement of the ability to deal with complex and composite problems.
These modern skills shape Deep Learning, the acquisition of which is the goal of the modern school. Through Deep Learning, the integrated development of students' personalities is achieved, as this ensures thorough knowledge, as well as social and professional skills.
