Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to seek means that enhance social and emotional learning for 4th grade Elementary School pupils firstly through the detection of references included in their school books that reinforce their social and emotional development and secondly through the detection of the impact of a programme of social and emotional learning to the improvement of the social and emotional skills of these students. The “Social and Emotional Learning” pertains to the systematic guidance in the classroom, so that pupils learn to acknowledge and manage their emotions, develop caring for others, create positive interpersonal relationships and solve effectively problematic situations, skills necessary for success both in school and life. This research was conducted in two phases. In the first phase it was aimed to detect activities relevant to the improvement of social and emotional learning that are included in the school books of Greek Language, History, Mathematics, Environmental Studies and Religious Education of 4th grade of Elementary School. In the second phase it was aimed to detect the impact of a social and emotional learning programme on the development of social and emotional skills of 4th grade pupils. For the needs of this thesis a social and emotional learning programme was developed and carried out which rests upon the theoretical context of the PATHS programme. The methological tool utilized for the collection of the statistics information was the PATHS student evaluation form. According to the results of this research after the implementation of the social and emotional learning programme, many 4th grade pupils’ behaviors improved both on an individual level as well as on the classroom’s level, a fact which combined with the restricted number of activities which strengthen social and emotional skills included in 4th grade school books, makes essential the introduction of social and emotional learning in elementary school, in order to achieve an overall development of students.
