Investigating the relationships between self-esteem and learning motivation with parenting practices in adolescent students
Summary:
Abstract
Plethora of previous studies on parenthood, have highlighted the contribution of parents and their adopted practices on the psychological construction of adolescent students. The aim of the study revolves around the investigation of the relationship of parenting practices and the self-esteem as well as the learning motives, during their adolescence period. The quantitative analysis comprised a sample of adolescent students, with an overall number of 116 secondary school students (68 males and 48 females), averaged 14-15 years old, on their last year of secondary school education. Data collection was performed through three distinct adjusted questionnaires, centering around their self-esteem, their relationship with their parents from the students perspective and learning motives. In particular, the questionnaires that were provided were the following: The Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, which evaluates the self-esteem and self-image of the students, the Academic Motivation Self-Rating Inventory, which quantifies the self-motivation of learning objectives of students, the Parental Behaviour, which assesses five dimensions of parental behavior as perceived from children and a demographic questionnaire. The analysis concluded that the mothers are more affectionate and stressed, during their adolescent children’s upbringing. Moreover, it was discovered in the current study that female students had higher learning motivation compared to male students, whereas male students had an enhanced self-esteem compared to female students. Throughout this analysis, it was found out that demographic features of parents correlated with the self-esteem and mobilization of adolescents. The current study contributes to the understanding on the impact that parenthood practices have on the self-esteem and learning motives development of adolescent students. In addition, it suggests further practices that can be adopted from parents, through which adolescents can improve and succeed.
