Inflammatory bowel disease and pregnancy: The impact of education on knowledge and attitude of women
Summary:
Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects women in reproductive age and therefore pregnancy related issues are arisen.
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of educational intervention on knowledge and attitude among women of reproductive age suffering from IBD toward pregnancy related issues.
Methods: It was an interventional study and involved women in reproductive age suffering from IBD during their visit at a large hospital of Athens from April 2016 till September 2017. Data were collected at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months. Knowledge level was assessed using Crohn's and Colitis Pregnancy Knowledge Score questionnaire (CCPKnow) and attitude and beliefs with a questionnaire suitably formed for this study. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25 and the level of statistical significance was set at p≤0.05.
Results: 82 patients (43 patients in intervention group and 39 in control group) finally participated in the study. The mean age of the patients was 28.5 years for the intervention group (SD = 6.26) and 36.9 years for the control group (SD = 6.14). Patients in the intervention group showed a statistically significant improvement of knowledge level throughout the study. The difference between initial and final value was important (11.11 ± 3.82) for the intervention group, while in control group the difference was negligible (-0.10 ± 0.55). Patients in intervention group modified their beliefs and attitude during the study significantly, whereas the differences in control group were not statistically significant.
Conclusions: Education emerged as an important nursing intervention for the improvement of knowledge level of women suffering from IBD, but it does not appear to fully define women's attitude towards reproductive issues to such an extent to eliminate fear and misconceptions.
