Summary:
The Greco-Ottoman War of 1897 is the first organized attempt, after the revolution of 1821, to expand the borders of the Greek state through the military route. The opportunity given by the outbreak of the Cretan Revolution was ideal in order to achieve the goals of the Great Idea, but the financial hardship of the Greek state combined with the unpreparedness of the army condemned the project to failure.
In this paper we will try to analyze not only the factors that led to the first military failure of the Greek state, but we will focus on the role played by the crown and the Greek royal dynasty in the entire political and military venture. The fear of expulsion and the attempt to retain the Greek throne were the driving force of the actions of King George I and at the same time the entire royal family. Was this fear enough to understand the expectations of the national restoration of the Greek people, as expressed through the Great Idea? Did it become possible through this to integrate the royal dynasty into Greek society? This monograph, based on a multi-faceted bibliography that includes the recording of the Greek press of the time, intends to illuminate the role of the crown and the Glücksburg dynasty in the interior of Greece during this period. The main primary sources are the Acropolis newspaper, and the works Odysseus, Turkey in Europe (London Edward Arnold 1900) and Henry W. Nevinson, Scenes in the Thirty Days War between Greece and Turkey (London 1898).
