Hemolytic transfusion reactions
Summary:
Blood transfusion is a necessity for a variety of pathological situations. Emergencies as surgeries and acute bleeding incidents may also be treated via transfusion. Despite its undeniable value of the procedure a variety of factors is associated with its outcome and threatens both well-being and viability of patients.
An important feature of transfusion is the possible occurrence of adverse effects with most important among them the appearance of hemolytic transfusion reactions, acute or delayed. Hemolytic transfusion reactions are found to be rather common among adverse effects of blood transfusion and their detection is accompanied with severe effects even lethal.
Although the incidence of acute hemolytic transfusion reactions, which are found easier to detect, is being alleviated due to the implementation of systematic identification of patients, delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions continue to pose a challenge, mainly because of their late detection. Preventive strategies have been proposed in order to reduce hemolytic transfusion reactions and to attenuate hemolytic-associated morbidity and mortality.
It is therefore of great importance to satisfy a majority of security factors during transfusion. Both medical and nurse employees must inspect thoroughly before, during and after the completion of the procedure as patient’s safety is considered to be a major parameter in providing medical care of high quality.
The present thesis examines the importance of blood transfusion as well as the possible adverse reactions that may arise during or after this procedure. Specifically, it focuses on hemolytic transfusion reactions and analyzes both acute and delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction describing their clinical manifestations and their symptoms. Furthermore it attempts to present the causes, the diagnostic considerations and their management. At last it proposes clear guidelines concerning safe transfusion and describes different parameters that have to be applied before, during and after the completion of the procedure.
