From the E-Parliament to the Co-Productive Visual Representation of Legislative and Constitutional Texts As a Means of Citizens’ Active Democratic Participation: The Case of Digital and Visual Storytelling of Constitutional Rights by Greek Adolescents
Summary:
The thesis examines and connects two research areas: the examination of the usefulness as far as concerned the visualized legal information, which is an integral part of the parliament’s role (its constitutional role). This examination takes place in terms of the useful transparency. On the other side, the procedure and process of the visualization of a selected constitutional right is examined using the visual and digital storytelling technique and incorporating this process following the principles of an active and participatory procedure. Taking into account that the process of the right’s visualization was implemented by the participants – a sample of Greek adolescents – it could be characterized as a co-productive procedure. Action Research and Design Thinking were the two methodological approaches adopted for this procedure. The workshops, which had taken place, resulted in interesting facets not only regarding the usefulness of the information and transparency, but also as far as the useful transparency is concerned. In particular, the importance of the constitutional text remains significant during the adolescents’ evaluation, however, its visualization reinforces its usefulness. On the one side, the constitutional right in a textual form serves transparency, since the total amount of the information is available to the participants (Greek adolescents). On the other side, the visualized form of the constitutional right serves its usable acquisition, by receiving the most important information in a convenient way. This results in reinforcing our opinion that the legal information visualization does not necessarily undermines the importance of a legal or a constitutional text. On the contrary, it acts supplementally. The process that has been followed was evaluated as an exciting one by the majority of the participants, indicating its collaborative nature. In fact, the process was reinforced by the elements of entertainment and creativity, proving that the idea of participation does not necessarily need to be conducted with characteristics of seriousness and plain argumentation. On the contrary, the variety of the methods used and the playful character of the process enabled the ability of learning. Moreover, the organized character of the procedure made clear -followed by the participants’ evaluation at the end of each workshop – that the conduct of each stage and method was necessary for the completion of the end result. Finally, the combination and the usage of both analogous and digital methods during the process validate the principles of the e-Parliament implementation.
