Perspectives, perceptions and attitudes of teachers of Primary and Secondary education in relation to the high- ability students in their classroom: case-study in three middle schools
Summary:
The aim of the study constituted the investigation of the attitudes and the perceptions of teachers of Primary and Secondary schools, about the education of high- ability students and also their views about the sense of giftedness, as it emerges by the characteristics that they attribute to their gifted students. 44 teachers and 647 students participated. The first two improvised tools of the research are consisted of 18 and 21 questions and both have been used in previous studies. The results showed that, when teachers are called to point out a gifted student, they focus on cognitive characteristics and sometimes on behavioral. In the investigative part, is also studied/examined the interactive relationship between the configuration of self-efficacy that high-ability students present and the attitudes and perceptions of their teachers. A self efficacy scale, based on Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale of Scwarzer&Jerusalem (1995) was administered to students for this measurement. The second part, is consisted of a case study that focuses on the expressed refers of teachers that originated from 3 secondary schools and are related with the general characteristics that they attribute to their high-ability students. Furthermore, the answers are investigated according to the teachers demographic characteristics. As the results showed, teachers are positively disposed toward issues that are related to giftedness, independently of their capability to apply a number of targeted educative methods.
