Saint Andreas of Crete the Melodist. Life and Work
Summary:
In this doctoral dissertation an attempt is made to rework the life and times of St. Andrew, Archbishop of Crete. Emphasis is given on the points of his life which have been dark: the priest's monothelitical (one/divine willing of crisis) heresy, his trip from Crete to Constantinople about an ecclesiastical matter and his random exile to Lesvos, where he finally died. All the sources related to his life (lives, encomia, synaxaria, epigrams, hymns, acolouthiae, troparia, historical testimonies) are enumerated and recorded, as well as a comparison among the most important of them is made, in order to establish their common beliefs or disagreements.
Later on, the priest’s artistic, poetic and prose, production has constantly been reviewed. The author and poet’s criteria of style have been recorded, in an attempt to prove the view about Andrew as the creator of the literature kind of canon. His canons and other minor poetic works, as well as the speeches, have been identified and marked, through bibliography on the edited and from the codices for the unpublished, while we also characterize both the poet and the orator Andrew.
In the third chapter, a complete list of all works, genuine and contentious, published and unpublished, poetic and prose, is drawn up, in accordance with the calendar and the feast days. The title, the sound, the presence of the second ode, incipit, editio, the heirmoi and their origin, desinit, codices and a small summary of their content of the unpublished speeches in the manuscripts are recorded. There is still an attempt to verify, if possible, the origin of certain works. The artistic production of Andreas is divided into six chapters: canons (88), triodia-tetraodia (6), idiomela (56), stichera (34), iamboi, heirmological acolouthiae (68, in 8 sounds), speeches-encomia (65).
Finally, in the first annex of the dissertation we give a priest’s canon to the theopators Joachim and Anna, four idiomela, six stichera and one speech at the Entrance of the Virgin Mary. Each text is a review of origin, but, besides the critical memorandum, a memorandum of parallel passages is also required. In the second annex we list all the initia of andrew's works in the following order: heirmoi, canons-triodia-tetraodia, idiomela-stichera-iamboi, speeches-encomia.
