Risk factors in ICU patients with secondary blood coagulation and anemia.
Summary:
Introduction: Anemia is common in the intensive care unit and may be related with adverse effects. The effectiveness of management strategies, such as blood transfusions, erythropoietin, blood substitutes, iron therapy and minimization of diagnostic phlebotomy, are a goal for the better outcome of the patient's health.
Purpose: The purpose of this Systematic Review of Randomized Studies was to investigate the causes and risk factors responsible for the development of anemia and secondary blood coagulation disorders in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Material and Method: The method used was to search the relevant greek and international literature in the medical databases of randomized studies and expert opinions, with keywords concerning the causes and risk factors of anemia and coagulation disorders.
Results: The etiology of anemia and coagulation disorders in the ICU is multifactorial. They are associated with acute bleeding, hemodialysis, blood loss caused by diagnostic phlebotomy, acute inflammation and functional iron deficiency. These factors result in reduced of red blood cells (RBCs) production and survival and dysfunction of coagulation factors.
Conclusions: The occurrence of anemia and coagulation disorders is almost inevitable in patients admitted to the intensive care unit. Given their multifactorial etiology, it has an impact on patient morbidity and mortality. The medical staff has a crucial role in their prevention.
