Blood establishment in Covid-19 pandemic era: blood supply adequacy, donors' safety, staff's safety
Summary:
Περίληψη στα Αγγλικά
Coronaviruses are a group of viruses with origin in mammals and birds, that cause mainly respiratory tract infections. SARS and MERS pandemics have been identified in 2002 and 2012.
The first SARS-COV-2 infection was reported in late 2019 in Wuhan, China, and until the end of March, it had been spread to 157 countries worldwide. It was then when the World Health Organization (WHO) designated it as pandemic. The SARS-COV-2 pandemic is still raging around the globe. Precautionary measures based on social distancing and personal hygiene measures are applied while special attention is given to early detection, isolation, and tracing of new infections, until extensive vaccination has been completed worldwide.
Blood Transfusion Services have been heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The rapid spread of the virus led to a dramatic shortage of blood supplies, because of the deferral of blood donors who were either infected or had been in contact with other, infected individuals. Furthermore, many individuals were hesitant or unable to visit the blood donation units because of either the fear of becoming infected or the restrictions for non-essential movements.
Blood Transfusion Services incorporated the guidelines released by both global (e.g., WHO, ECDS etc.) and local competent authorities (e.g., Ministry of Health, Hellenic National Blood Transfusion Center etc.) and adopted daily procedures in order to ensure uninterrupted blood donation flow and efficient management of blood supplies while protecting blood donors and their staff.
The pandemic in Greece showed similar characteristics as in most of the countries worldwide. Blood Transfusion Services adjusted their daily
practices and procedures according to the guidelines of the National and International Competent Authorities as well as to the local conditions.
The aim of this study is to present all the COVID-19 pandemic related data collected. In addition, it presents the impact of the pandemic on the Blood Donation System worldwide and in Greece, in terms of blood supply adequacy/ safety, as well as blood donors’/ staff safety, under these unprecedented conditions.
