Atrial fibrilation as risk factor for stroke
Summary:
Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the main causes of stroke.
Aim: The aim of the study was to examine the association of stroke with the presence of AF as a risk factor.
Material and Method: The sample of the study were 175 patients with stroke who were hospitalized in the General Hospital of Sparta during 2018 -2019. The data were collected from patients’ medical records filling a structured questionnaire which was developed for the aim of the study.
For the statistical analysis, was used the chi-squared test at a 5% level of significance.
Results: Of the 175 patients with stroke, 52.9% were male, medical history of cardiovascular disease reported 69.4%, AF 67.1% and other arrhythmias 15.4%. Thromboembolic stroke had 17.0%, cardioembolic 38.6%, hemorrhagic 15.2% and transient ischemic attack 29.2%. More often AF was reported in people with cardiovascular disease (p<0.001), hypertension (p<0.001), history of coronary heart disease (p=0.001), history of heart valve disease (p<0.001), and those with heart failure (p<0.001). Also AF was observed in people with stroke where the lesion is on the middle cerebral artery (p=0.008).
Conclusion: The largest percentage of patients with stroke episode had AF. Early detection and treatment of AF prevents a significant proportion of stroke.
