Current situation of solid waste management in Attica
Summary:
This Thesis examines the solid waste management issue and the problem of space management of uncontrolled garbage disposal. As a member of the European Union, Greece is called upon to comply with the existing European legislation requiring the rehabilitation of all uncontrolled garbage disposal sites and the establishment of Landfill Sites. Choosing the optimal location of the site is not an easy task as it is a multifactorial problem with geological, environmental, economic and social implications. Although science has developed a methodology and legal laws have been enacted, however, in Greece, the NIMBY phenomenon (not in my backyard) is intense, often creating problems that are not easy to overcome. Mainly with the rapid residential development of the last 20 years, most of the suburbs of Athens have become a big "backyard". An important tool in solving the problem of the proper location of a landfill site is the Geographical Information Systems GIS. With the help of the GIS we will investigate the area of the Municipality of Kropia in the prefecture of Attica for locations that is permitted for the construction of a new landfill site.
