Interventions to prevent traumatic falls in older adults
Summary:
Introduction: Falls in older adults are one of the most serious syndromes leading to serious injury, disability, death and impose a serious financial impact on health systems.
Purpose: The purpose of this dissertation was to highlight the most effective ways to assess the risk of falling as well as to prevent traumatic falls in people over 60 living in the community.
Material and method: An umbrella review was carried out including systematic reviews published over the last decade in the PubMed and Cochrane Library online databases of people over 60 living in the community. Studies involving people living in care units or hospitals were not included in the study.
Results: Interventions that helped reduce falls were exercise, multifactorial interventions, multidisciplinary interventions, improving quality strategies, modifying medication, self-care, treating lower extremity problems, and removing environmental hazards while an effective way of detecting people at increased risk of falling was the combination of clinical and diagnostic tests.
Conclusions: There are enough data to guide the medical community in adopting a clear and universally accepted framework of guidelines on how to effectively detect older adults at increased risk of falls as well as fall prevention interventions
