Summary:
The object of the present thesis is the cross-linguistic study of semantic prosody and its implications for translation. The study focuses on the lexical item "signs of" in English, which has negative semantic prosody according to the literature. The purpose of this research is to study the semantic prosody of "signs of" in a parallel corpus of English and Greek texts, as well as the semantic prosody of the equivalent words used in Greek. The semantic prosody of the Greek words (σημεία, ενδείξεις, σημάδια, συμπτώματα, ίχνος/ή, δείγματα, σήματα, εκδηλώσεις) was studied in both the Europarl7 parallel corpus and the Corpus of Greek Texts, a monolingual corpus of Greek texts. The research confirmed the negative semantic prosody of the lexical item "signs of" in English and found that this also holds for the Greek data in the parallel corpus. The further study of the equivalents of “signs of” in Greek in the Corpus of Greek Texts showed that semantic prosody is related with the individual meaning of these words and in particular that the meaning of “signs of” has negative semantic prosody, in contrast to other meanings of the words, in which neutral semantic prosody may be prevalent. In addition, data suggests that the field of texts in which words appear is significant for semantic prosody. For instance, the medical field is related with negative semantic prosody. Finally, an important finding is the correlation of specific patterns in which words appear with negative semantic prosody. Translators should be aware of semantic prosody, as it is an important part of word meaning, related to context and can be assisted in identifying it by the use of corpora and other specialized tools in the translation process.
