Use of dexamethasone for pistoperative pain in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. A review of literature
Summary:
Introduction
Postoperative pain after total hip arthroplasty is a major problem for patients. Medication for postoperative pain involves risks of side effects that may affect the functional outcome and patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to review the use of dexamethasone in the treatment of postoperative pain in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty.
Material & Methods
The Pubmed online database was used to review the literature. A search was performed using the keywords "dexamethasone" AND ("total hip arthroplasty" OR "total hip replacement" OR "THA" OR "THR"). The review included articles written in English, which referred to the administration of dexamethasone for the treatment of postoperative pain after total hip arthroplasty. Animal studies, meta-analyzes, systematic reviews, research protocols, case reports, articles that did not assess postoperative pain, and articles that did not evaluate dexamethasone were excluded.
Results
Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria for the review. Of these, 10 were double-blind, randomized studies. Also, 2 prospective comparative studies and 2 retrospective comparative studies were identified.
Conclusions
There are sufficient scientific data to support the beneficial use of dexamethasone in improving postoperative analgesia after total hip arthroplasty. Further high quality studies are required to fully elucidate the analgesic role of dexamethasone, the optimal dosage and the most effective route of administration.
