Summary:
In this current study, 29 soil and 12 road dust samples were studied from the industrial vicinity of Volos, Greece. The collected samples were analyzed in order to assess the mobility of Pb, Zn, Cu and Mn; potentially toxic elements which may pose a threat to the environment and human health. Using single extraction procedures of 0.43Μ HNO3 (reactive fraction) and 0.5Μ HCl (potentially bioavailable) on urban soils, soils surrounding cement factory, soils surrounding steel factory (Velestino) and road dusts, it was possible to estimate the environmental availability of these elements. Pb was found to be the most available metal in both environmental compartments and three districts. Specifically, the availability of Zn, Cu and Mn was higher in urban soils than in industrial soils surrounding the steel and cement factory (Zn: Urban soils > Velestino soils > Cement soils, Cu: Urban > Velestino soils, Cement soils and Mn: Urban soils, Cement soils > Velestino soils). Concerning the availability of ZnHNO3, ZnHCl, PbHNO3 and CuHNO3 is higher in road dusts, while the availability of MnHNO3, MnHCl, PbHCl and CuHCl is higher in soils. In the case of the soil samples, the variable of Clay (%) content is correlated with the availability (mg/kg) of Zn and Cu and respectively the variable of CaCO3 (%) content is correlated with the availability of Mn, restricting their mobility. On the contrary, SOM (%) content enhances the mobility of Pb and Zn, while Clay (%) content enhances the mobility of Mn. On the other hand, in the case of road dusts, the physiochemical properties are not correlated with the available trace elements. The mobility, is positively affected by the total concentration of the metals of interest in soils and road dusts.
