Domestic Violence against women / Intimate Partner Violence. Investigation of the attitudes and perceptions of the general population
Summary:
Without a doubt, the violence against women that takes place in private and social field is a shameful violation of fundamental human rights and is considered as a serious public health problem with global dimensions that undermines the physical, mental and social quality of life and health of women. The most common form is domestic violence in which in the vast majority of cases the perpetrator is the husband and the victim is his partner. This violence is also known as Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). IPV is a complex and multifactor matter, the perpetuation and strengthening of which or its weakening, as shown by numerous studies, is related to the perceptions and views of the general population. The present research paper aims to study in Greece the perceptions and attitudes / degree of acceptance of the general population towards IPV in the midst of economic crisis as well as the factors that affect it. In particular, the individual research objectives are: to describe the perceptions and attitudes / degree of acceptance of the general population towards IPV, to detect socio-demographic and psychological factors (such as non-clinical - delusional thinking) associated with increased / decreased IPV, to observe the role of the financial crisis in the reduced / increased acceptance of IPV, to explore a possible correlation between indicators of cognitive social capital (institutional trust, interpersonal trust, loneliness, social networks, social support), degree of cohesion and family opposite IPV. The research tool incorporated the Acceptability of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women Scale / A-IPVAW scales, Gender Roles Stereotypes Scale, Peters Delusions Inventory - PDI -21, Oslo Social Support, Family Habits and European Social Research fields, a the Quality of Life Scale of the World Health Organization and finally five short stories of IPV justification. The information was collected by distributing the questionnaires to a sample of 130 people selected through simple random sampling. The main findings showed that the acceptance of violence against women in a marital / partner relationship depends on the interaction of the following factors: compliance with female stereotypes, low family cohesion, male gender and low educational level (mandatory education).
