Disability and autonomy: Exploring the views and experiences of adults with disabilities regarding the parental role in the process of autonomy
Summary:
The family is the main body of society and one of the key factors in transmitting culture, views, ethics, traditions and emotions. Parents are the most important people in the lives of their children, as they play a prominent role in their upbringing and development. The parental role is very important for the present and future shaping of children's lives (Riyahi et all. 2017).Their cultural beliefs about disability play an important role in determining how the family perceives disability and the types of measures they will take to prevent treatment and rehabilitation (Ashum & Singal, 2004).Parents of people with disabilities have an impact on the daily lives of people with disabilities in relation to autonomy (Barron, 2001). While the history of social exclusion practices towards people with disabilities has contributed to a deficit in the management of autonomy issues (Carter et all. 2013). It is therefore a fact that the way we perceive and define disability is crucial as it affects both our expectations and the ways in which we interact with people with disabilities (Barton, 2012). It turns out that most people assimilate the norms of their cultural environment and therefore the values of people in turn reflect the norms assimilated by the environment in which they grew up (Friendman, 2003).
This research is a qualitative interpretive approach. The sample consisted of five adults with visual disabilities and ten parents, more specifically the parents of the disabled participants. The sampling method used was convenience sampling, but also sampling of homogeneous samples, on the one hand convenience because the cases are immediately available as they were a wider friendly family environment and on the other hand cases were selected that have common features for studying and understanding a specific group. At the same time, the semi-structured interview was selected as a suitable research tool. The interviews were transcribed and indexed for further in-depth analysis. Content analysis was used to group and analyze the research findings.
The results of the research highlighted the prevailing conceptual views on autonomy that are those of independence and self-service. Views that undermine that people with disabilities can be autonomous as long as they do not conform to the social norm of the autonomous individual. As well as that the main contribution of the role of the parents was to help the acquisition of functional skills in the disabled. The meaning of disability as damage, deficit and disability is predominant. Prospects that contribute to the devaluation of the disabled person who fails to perform normal roles based on the regulatory standards of society.
