Why people die? Investigation of the main causes of death based on socioeconomic determinants and its significance at the implementation of Public Health measures
Summary:
It is of great significance to record and investigate the main causes of death worldwide because this is a way to inspect the efficient functioning of the healthcare systems of the nations. However, the fundamental causes of death - the causes of the causes- which result from the socioeconomic conditions that people live, must also be aknowledged. In the present master thesis, an attempt has been made to record the association of the main causes of death with specific social determinants of health, based on a systematic review of the international literature. It is concluded that even though poverty is a basic cause of the existing health inequalities it is not the only one, so the increase of the funding of the healthcare structures and the personal income of the individuals is not enough for the elimination of these inequalities. Governments and public health stakeholders should implement strategies and measures targeting the mitigation of the unfair distribution of health, by fighting the existing social gradient.
