Summary:
Assessment-analysis of natural hazards is a first action for the preparation and formulation of emergency plans. In addition, the urban and spatial framework is the background on which business plans are developed, as it plays an important role in drafting instructions from local authorities to the citizens. The above data are unique for each region of the country and are the scope of the general operational plans described by the civil protection plans and the respective institutional framework.
The city of Kos and in general the whole island of Kos is a special case since
a. It is characterized by the manifestation of special natural hazards due to the special morphology, neotectonic deformation and geodynamic evolution, given the proximity not only with the active Greek arc but also with the active volcanic arc.
b. It has special urban and spatial characteristics which are in line with its historical route and cultural monuments, insularity and recent urban planning actions after the catastrophic earthquake of 1933.
All this creates a complex but also absolutely interesting framework for the design of the basic directions of shaping the local emergency plans.
This dissertation analyzes - assesses the risk of severe weather events as well as flood risk, seismic and volcanic risk based on existing data. Then, based on the spatial-urban planning framework, the places of gathering, shelter and distribution of the population are selected and proposed.
It should be emphasized that the data resulting from the catastrophic earthquake of 21 July 2017 of magnitude 6.6 on the Richter scale that occurred in the area and the geodynamic sea waves caused in the sea area between Kos and the Asia Minor coastline are taken into account. specialized communication plans for the residents of Kos.
