Patients' knowledge, beliefs and attitudes, on exercise and participation in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programme
Summary:
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate and correlate with socio-demographic and clinical factors, knowledge, beliefs, attitude of patients about exercise and participation in a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program.
METHODOLOGY: The study included 121 patients, 56 men and 65 women over the age of 18, who visited co-located cardiology and pulmonology private practices. Each patient was asked to answer a questionnaire of socio-demographic data, one of perceptions of their health - The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire - and one of knowledge, perceptions and attitudes about exercise and participation in a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program. Their disease and the Charlson Comorbidity Index have been completed. For patients suffered from COPD and heart failure, the mMRC and NYHA scales were completed, respectively.
RESULTS: A) Findings for all participants: Knowledge about the benefits of exercise: 95% and 91.7% of patients knew about the benefits of exercise in prevention and treatment respectively. Systematic exercise: The main reasons are the improvement of psychology and endurance in daily activities and the main barriers are the lack of endurance and the bad psychological state. Correlation with socio-demographic and clinical data and perceptions of health. Referral rate: 51.2% of patients received a recommendation for prevention. Compliance with the recommendations: Correlation with socio-demographic data and health perceptions. Participation in an exercise program inside or outside gym: 53.7% of study participants and correlation was observed with their socio-demographic and clinical data. B) Findings for patients with chronic disease: Reference rate for exercise in the context of treatment for the disease from which it suffers: 64.9% of patients received a recommendation. Compliance with the recommendations: Correlation with smoking habit and clinical data. Participation in an exercise program at a rehabilitation centre: 47.9% of patients would participate and a correlation was observed with perceptions about their illness.
CONCLUSION: A large percentage of health care recipients are aware of the role and benefits of exercise, but the rates of systematic exercise observed are much lower combined with low referral rates and the particular demographic and clinical characteristics of patients. Systematic interventions would be useful for both patients and healthcare professionals in order to increase participation in programs.
