Level of knowledge of ICU nurses in the regognition of cardiac arrhytmias
Summary:
Introduction: The ability to recognize of cardiac arrhythmias by health nurses is particularly important for early and effective treatment.
Aim: To investigate the level of knowledge of nurses, working in Intensive Care Units (ICU) on the recognition and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
Method: Perspective descriptive study was performed in 4 hospitals in the prefecture of Athens. The sample of the study consisted of 90 nurses, who were working in ICUs. Data collection was performed with a specially designed self-administered questionnaire, which included demographic, professional dataand31closed-ended knowledge assessment questions. The questionnaire was based on the guidelines of the European Resuscitation Council.
Results: The rate Cronbach’s a was 0.802. 85.6% of the participants were women, while the mean age (± TA) of nurses was 37.47 (± 7.79) years. The average number of correct answers in the total questionnaire of nurses was 23.26 (±5.11) questions. The multivariate linear regression found that important predictors of the overall knowledge score were age (p=0.001), years of experience in the ICU (p=0.002), the occupation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation seminars (p=0.018), the level of basic education (p=0.013) and the frequency of treatment of cardiac arrest per year (p=0.006).
Conclusions: The level of knowledge and treatment of nurses in recognizing cardiac arrhythmias was moderate. The results of this research demonstrate the need for systematic and continuous training of nurses in cardiac arrhythmias.
