Urban environment resilience in relation to global warming
Summary:
In this thesis the study of climate change with regard to its effects on the urban environment as well as the evaluation of the environmental impact on building infrastructure are presented. I have attempted to approach the issue through the analytical description of climate change, the causes, the consequences and the response measures, and further to this, the study of the consequences resulting from building infrastructure, as well as the effects of climate change on the urban environment.
Specifically, in describing climate change, we refer to the change of global climate and particularly the changes with regard to meteorological conditions of a large time scale that involve statistically significant fluctuations that with reference to the average conditions of climate or its variability, in the long run of decades or even longer periods. The changes in climate are the result of natural processes, as well as human activity. It should be noted, however, that climate change is more specifically defined as the change in climate as a result of direct or indirect human activities, distinguishing the term from climate variability which is a result of natural causes.
The effects of climate change include the increase or decrease of temperature, the fluctuation of the frequency and intensity of rainfall, the alteration of the seasons, ice melting, the increase of the sea level and also the catastrophic extreme phenomena, the occurrence of which have become more frequent, such as floods, hurricanes, drought, catastrophic waves, increase in radiation etc. Therefore there will be a study and analysis of actions that will act to reduce the phenomenon of climate change and the drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and strategies for low carbon emissions while at the same time promoting actions with the help of laws, rules and instructions and for sound energy management.
With the term ‘urban environment’ we refer to the geographical regions that are significantly affected by man. It should be noted that the impact of climate change on the urban environment refers mainly to matters, for example the danger of floods and the measures that could be taken to prevent flooding, the awaited effects of the rise of sea level and the design of adaptation policies. A study has been made, in this thesis, of the policies and actions in the fields of economy and climate change with the goal of protecting the urban environment with regard to renewable sources of energy, smart cities, sustainable development, sustainable land management, dealing with natural disasters and the designing optimal energy saving policies.
Further to this, a study will be presented on the contribution of the urban environment to climate change, mainly in urban centers, where atmospheric pollution and water resources, as a result of the combustion in the engines of the means of transport, the burners of residential and industrial facilities. Accordingly, sea and river water is polluted and waste is constantly increasing while the ground is destroyed by clearing land for buildings.
Finally, a study will be presented on the subject of bioclimatic design of buildings, the technological improvement of energy production, the use of environmental friendly materials, the improvement of the urban fabric as well as of the quality characteristics of buildings which may to some extent offset the effects of climate change.
