Constructing historical knowledge and exploring ancient Athens with the use of the interactive digital storytelling and e-learning platform 'Ancient Athens'
Summary:
For the current master thesis, an interactive digital storytelling platform named “Ancient Athens” was created in the context of a design research, in an attempt to confront chronic issues that have been observed in the conventional way of teaching History. The main objective of this research is to examine the educational results of the distance utilization of this software. In order to do that, quantitative and qualitative data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, with a sample of 10 high school graduates. The results of the research were encouraging, as a) the student activation throughout the course was boosted through interactive choices that were included, b) the software contributed to the construction of new historical knowledge by the participants, c) the majority of the participants preferred this way of learning History instead of the conventional one, and d) very few technical issues were observed in the educational utilization of the software. Lastly, a few corrections and extensions are suggested to eliminate the issues and imperfections that were observed in the digital storytelling platform “Ancient Athens” for future educational applications.
