Summary:
This dissertation aims to examine the process of the split of the Irish Republican movement (Sinn Fein and IRA) in 1969 and how it affected Provisional IRA and Sinn Fein during the first decade of the Troubles.
In this context, the dissertation examines the Irish Republican movement through various events for example: from the end of the Border Campaign in 1962 to its gradual radicalization and massification through the 1960s. From the move towards a Marxist class struggle outlook to the split within the movement after the clashes in 1969. From the formation of Provisional IRA and its paramilitary activities to the political shift of the younger republicans of the Provisionals. From guns and bombs to the 1981 Hunger Strikes and the Armalite and ballot box strategy.
In contrast to the traditional approach of the Troubles period, this dissertation aims to present a more complex and multifaceted reality of the internal conflict and the split that arose in the late 1960s in the Irish Republican Movement. In addition, one of the main purposes of this dissertation is to help the Greek reading public understand relatively unknown aspects of the Irish Republican Movement, especially Provisional IRA and Sinn Fein.
