The Evangelismos hospital central nervous system tumor registry 2009-2018
Summary:
Central Nervous System Tumors comprise a group of neoplasms with high rates of mortality and morbidity despite the relatively low incidence in the population.
In Greece, since 1998, an attempt has been made to record the frequency and epidemiological data of the occurrence of tumors of the Central Nervous System in the Neurosurgical Department of Evangelismos Hospital, the largest general hospital in Greece. In this study we will be concerned with the data of the years 2010-2018.
The aim of the dissertation is to record and analyze the epidemiological and demographic data of the different histological types of CNS tumors as well as the duration of hospitalization and in-hospital mortality for the above patients.
The clinic's database identified 1785 newly diagnosed patients with different histological types of CNS tumors who underwent surgery for the first time either for tumor resection or for simple biopsy from 2010 to 2018.
The average age of patients was 58 years while 50.5% were women. In our data were also recorded 99 patients of non-Greek origin with a mean age of 48 years. Glioma was the most common diagnosis. The average number of hospital days was 13 days, with foreign patients showing a significant increase in the duration of hospitalization compared to Greek patients. In-hospital mortality accounted for 5.7% of the total sample. During the study, a decrease in both the duration of hospitalization and in-hospital mortality was observed over time.
