Silences and Pathways: The role of the private parallel support educator in the inclusion of a disabled student / an action research
Summary:
In a conjuncture marked by the rapid growth of the Special Education sector and – its direct corollary – the growing visibility of disabled students’ schooling, this paper focuses on exploring the dimensions of a private parallel support educator’s role in the inclusion of a disabled student in a mainstream school setting. During an action research, an attempt was made to explore the relationship dynamics between general educators and the parallel support educator as well as between ablebodied and disabled actors along three main lines of inquiry: the expectations invested on the educator – researcher in the school setting, the strategies that could foster inclusion, the limitations encountered and the possibilities of surpassing them. Thus, the scope of a parallel support educator’s action emerges as an ambivalent place, where inclusion and exclusion are deeply intertwined.
