Punishment practices in Greece. The exile penalty from mid-seventeenth to early nineteenth century

This dissertation examines the punishment practices and more specifically the exile penalty in Greece from mid­seventeenth up to the beginning of the nineteenth century. It focuses on the function of exile in the premodern society of the time and on the reasons an individual was displaced. It also examines the evolution of exile penalty and the changes of the imposed punishments in Greece in the above period. During this period, the intense administrative, economic and social changes that took place in the Ottoman Empire resulted in the changes of imposed punishment practices. These changes also affected the legal framework of non-muslims leaving in Greece.
From the study of primary sources in many greek areas, it becomes obvious that during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the exile penalty was established for a wide range of offences. The importance of exile for the attempt of population control, order maintenance and administration of justice is also examined. Finally, certain cases in which the defendant was expelled are presented in detail in order to highlight further aspects and characteristics of the exile penalty and the procedure followed for an individual’s displacement.
