Summary:
The dissertation focuses on the influence of western scholasticism in Late Byzantium as it is portrayed by the epitome of George Gennadios II’ Scholarios on the chapter De passionibus animae, q. 22-48 of Summa Theologiae, ST of Thomas Aquinas. The study of the epitome (Œuvres Complètes de Gennadios Scholarios, Γενναδίου τοῦ Σχολαρίου Ἅπαντα τὰ Εὑρισκόμενα, L. Petit, Χ. Siderides & Μ. Jugie (eds). T. I-VIII. Paris: Maison de la Bonne Presse, 1928-1936) led to the comparative study of the exact quaestiones of ST («Prima Secundae Summae Theologiae. A Quaestione 1 ad Quaestionem LXX», in Opera omnia iussu impensaque Leonis XIII P. M. edita. Vol. 6. Ad Codices Manuscriptos Vaticanos Exacta. Romae: Ex Typographia Polyglotta, 1891).
The first two chapters embody a presentation of the different perspectives of Gennadios Scholarios’ life and work. I examine important aspects of his life that influenced and shaped his professional, theological, philosophical, didactic, authorial, monastic, and patriarchal work. Furthermore, I examine the context in which Scholarios acted on, his stance towards western scholasticism, the Aristotelian-Platonic controversy, Thomism and Palamism, as well as an assessment of the influence of his work on later thinkers.
In the main chapters, I compare the texts of the two thinkers and their individual convergences and divergences are being evaluated. The dissertation follows the classification that is set from Thomas on the passions.
