Transitional Final Neolithic and Early Bronze Age I lithic industries from Attica: A case study from Merenda
Summary:
The subject of this dissertation is the study of obsidian and flint chipped stone assemblages from the site of Merenda, Attica and their placement in the wider chronological, cultural and technological framework of the transitional FN/EH I and EH II period. A total of 17323chipped stone artifacts were studied, of which 2500 were included in a database for a detailed analysis. The study adopted an approach based on the examination of raw materials and tool technology and typology through the concept of operational chain. In addition to these three tenets, a fourth was defined, namely that of spatial distribution. Material was selected from both household and open areas, such as houses and refuse pits, while the nature of each concentration was described. The present study also examines the possibility that a workshop for the production of stone tools had been organized in Merenda, since the largescale of production in relation to the size of the settlement stands out in comparison to other sites of the transitional FN/EH I period. The criteria regarding the identification of stone tool workshops and the organization of production as part of the socio-economic system of the Transitional FN/EH I period are discussedin this context. For the evaluation of the data from Merenda, comparisons were made with chipped stone assemblagesfrom other published sites, while raw material from the settlement of Agios Kosmas, Attica, was also taken into account. According to the evidence that was gathered, the chipped stone assemblage of Merendaconstitutes a link that connects simple technologies, which are more common during the Neolithic period, with the more sophisticated techniques of the Early Helladic II period. Chipped stone productsfrom Merenda, namely blades and flakes, served as tool blanks for a variety of daily household activities. These tools are part of a new socio-economic milieu in Attica, related to the establishment of chipped stone production nodes.Such tools were probably circulating at a supra-local level. In Attica, knapping must have been a common practice from FN onwards and probably one of its defining cultural characteristics, which differentiated it from other neighboring areas.
