Representations of the sinful woman/prostitute in the Greek post-war film between 1955-1975: the poetic depiction in the delivery of form as an emergence of a new female identity
Summary:
This essay attempts an analysis regarding the representations of the woman as sinner or prostitute in the Greek post-war cinema of the period 1955-1975 and specifically, focuses on the poetic way of the perspective of some creators in the representation of her image, which marks the emergence of a new female identity. In the theoretical part, a brief presentation of feminist theories is attempted, as well as the developments launched by the gender perspective in the art of cinema. Furthermore, the gender representations in Greek cinema are studied in a co-reading with the social status quo of the period, while a separate reference is made to the ways of representation of the sinful woman / prostitute in the Greek cinema. For the needs of the study and being mindful of the length of the paper, three film texts of the specific period were selected, which are representative examples of the theme of the paper. Specifically, for the 1950s, Stella by M. Kakogiannis was chosen, for the 1960s, the film by V. Georgiadis, Red Lanterns was chosen, and for the 1970s, the film Evdokia by A. Damianos. These specific film texts exude a poetic approach of the creators, while at the same time are illuminating aspects of the female identity over the decades, shortly before the beginning of the political reformation period in Greece.
