Summary:

Natural disaster is an event caused by nature, such as a flood, an earthquake, a wildfire or a hurricane, which causes great damage and loss of life. Natural disasters appeared even be-fore humans existed and will continue to occur long after the age of humans has ended. Since the ‘90s, disaster management and prevention has become increasingly important. International organizations and governments are constantly taking steps to encounter natural hazards.
In this general context, the Armed Forces could not refrain from dealing with natural hazards. This is done by providing the means and personnel, in any place it could be request-ed by the competent authorities, to provide all possible assistance to the affected area. As natural hazards have emerged several times in recent years, the assistance of the Armed Forces has become frequent and often imperative.
Following the above, the General Staff of National Defense has created a plan of ac-tion for dealing with emergencies called "Xenocratis". It dictates the actions and the amount of contribution needed from the General Staff to counteract a natural disaster by supplying the affected area with the appropriate personnel, means and materials.
The purpose of this dissertation is: to present and analyze the role and contribution of the Armed Forces of Greece in the effective response to catastrophic phenomena caused by natural unforeseen events under the coordination of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection in accordance with applicable law, for the protection of life, health and property of citizens as well as for the protection of the natural environment.
