Summary:
The object of the thesis is the detection of the mechanisms of Greek education
in the Greek Orthodox communities of Ottoman Thrace during the last two decades of
the 19th century, with emphasis on the 1880s. During this period important
developments took place concerning the Greco-Bulgarian conflict in the region. The
analysis will focus on the efforts of such a mechanism of the orthodox millet with a
primarily educational orientation, which is founded by the circles of the Orthodox
Patriarchate of Constantinople. Under the auspices of Patriarch Joachim III who uses
a theological semiology, the "Educational and Philanthropic Fraternity Love Each
Other" was established in April 1880 in Constantinople. The project will break with
the standards of the development of collective activity until then, since it was not
issued by the up until then crystallized literate elits of each millet of the Ottoman
Empire. In the case of the Greek Orthodox it appeared in Constantinople at the
beginning of 1860s.
The thesis is articulated as follows. The introductory chapter records the
primary archival material along with the methodology of its analysis that is followed
later on in the thesis. Additionally, reference is made to the socio-political axes of the
time which defined the historical context in which the sources and bibliography were
studied. The second chapter examines through the literature and the statutes of the
Fraternity the establishment of similar associations based in Constantinople as an
Ottoman phenomenon. The third chapter presents the social networks of the
subscribers and administrators of the Fraternity, the economic dimensions of these
networks and their ideological positions on the distinction of education that should be
provided on the one hand in the urban and on the other in rural communities of
Southern Thrace. In the fourth chapter we proceed to the presentation of those who
participated in the educational movement as well as of the content of this education
that represented the attitude of the Orthodox patriarchal circles of Constantinople. In
the fifth and last chapter the institution and persons are discussed laying outside of the
millet who were involved in the educational process. The Fraternity cooperated and/or
sometimes came into conflict with them. On this point we mainly focus on the
reinterpretation of traditional terms in the vocabulary of the authorities of the millet.
Such an interpretation lead to a “modern” discourse, which did not always have all the
characteristics of a purely national ideology.
