The female statue at the Museum of Epidaurus with inv. number 555. Some observations on the "Orans" type
Summary:
The subject of study in this dissertation is the female honorific statue of the Museum of Epidaurus with inventory number 555. It is a roman statue of high quality. The calcei muliebres which are the quintessential roman shoes of mortal women, indicate that this statue is honorific. Their presence is decisive of that fact as, otherwise, it might be feasible that the statue depict a goddess.
First of all this paper contains a detailed description of the statue and its technical characteristics. Dating the statue is an intricate issue, because of its contradictory features.
On a deeper level this study shall especially examine and analyze the statue’s typology, which represents a unique variation of the “Formia” type. The statue in question has inspired further research into the type of praying women, which includes not only the “Formia” but also the “Louvre – Otricoli” type. The cause of studying both is to compare and contrast them to the variation of Epidaurus. Hence the variations and developments of these types are also examined. In addition, this paper aims to effectively disconnect the type of praying women (“orantes”) from that of women whom are presented as worshippers (“adorantes”), the two types tend to get confused for one another. In conclusion in order to follow the evolution of the “orantes” and “adorantes” it is attempted to detect the presence of any forerunners of theirs in Classical and Hellenistic sculpture.
