Knowledge and Acceptance of the Theory of Evolution by pre-service teachers
Summary:
Theory of Evolution is a grid of concepts that includes principles from various sciences such as Geology and Genetics and is one of the sixteen scientific explanations that a person must know in order to be considered scientifically literate. But what is the level of knowledge and acceptance for this Theory among pre-service teachers in Greece?
With the use of a questionnaire, we measured the knowledge and acceptance of the Theory of Evolution of 119 pre-service teachers, as well as their religious faith. The results showed that although pre-service teachers have a rather low knowledge of the Theory, the majority of them accepts it. Lastly, the only correlation between knowledge, acceptance and religious faith that is statistically significant is the one between religious faith and knowledge. Through this paper, the importance of further measurements and research around the Theory of Evolution and its knowledge and acceptance by teachers is highlighted, in order to mitigate any issues that may arise in the future.
