Teaching students to think systemically through the Greek Language Lesson
Summary:
Systems thinking has been emerged as a new educational paradigm over the last
decades and is considered as a complimentary way to overcome the negative and
unexpected effects that the current analytical thinking educational paradigm produces.
Thus, the purpose of the current study is to explore whether and under which conditions
a systems thinking course-intervention can be implemented within the current school
structure. The designed intervention respects the emergent nature of learning and
aspires to rejuvenate the current school teaching and learning practices and perceptions.
For the study’s purpose to be fulfilled, an action-research methodology was deemed
highly effective as it enables both the implementation of an educational intervention
and the observation and understanding of the underpinning processes. The study’s
findings are promising since students showed an improvement on their systems
thinking abilities and became acquainted with new learning practices. Concomitantly,
the study indicated and analyzed the emerging as enablers or barriers factors. The
originality of the study lies on (a) the selected mixed research methods for the collection x
and analysis of data, (b) the design of a valid and reliable systems thinking measurement
tool and (c) the combination of systems thinking with the complex and emergent nature
of learning. Therefore, the current study contributes to the theory development of the
field and fills in the research gap; more specifically, the study informs the existing body
of literature about systems thinking and broadens the approaches of how it can be
measured and developed.
