Corporate Social Responsibility in the field of telecommunications Comparative Study of CSR and their compliance with the GRI Standards

The creation and publication of social corporate responsibility reports (CSR) is an important aspect of today's corporate management for organizations who would like to coincide with an increasing tendency for sustainable development. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the lever of proper applicability of the GRI guidelines in the CSR reports issued by the three largest telecommunication organizations in Greece, which are Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind. Since the aforementioned companies represent the vast majority of the sector in Greece, it can safely be stated that by comparing them we can get a clear view of the sector in total. The comparison is done by grading the depth of the information provided for each topic of the Core requirements using a dedicated grading matrix.
In the beginning of the thesis, a brief review is conducted over the aspects of sustainability, sustainable development, and their importance in today’s corporate governance. Following there is a presentation of the prevalent reporting tools, the GRI standards and the ISO 26000.
For the purposes of the case study each topic was graded with a mark ranging from 0 to 4. Based on the results an analysis was made in order to define the level of applicability of the GRI reports in the Greek telecommunications sector, and if there are any significant differences in between the companies or the corresponding topic groups.
