Investigating and enhancing the mental health literacy of secondary education teachers: an intervention program
Summary:
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the mental health literacy of secondary
education teachers and to improve it through the Guide “Teacher Knowledge Update" by
the Canadian Organization Teen Mental Health. Mental health literacy includes the
ability to recognize mental disorders, the knowledge about risk factors and causes of
mental disorders, knowledge of self-help techniques, knowledge about seeking external
sources of help and attitudes towards mental illness . The important role of teachers in preventing, recognizing and intervening in the mental health problems of students requires enhanced mental health literacy and enhanced help-seeking behaviors and early treatment of disorders. The sample consisted of 80 secondary school teachers, 40 from the area of Trikala and 40 from the area of Attica. It was a web survey for both pre- and post-measurement of the teachers' mental health literacy with the Guide as intervention for the experimental group being sent through email. The findings showed that the intervention was effective, as there was an increase of experimental group ́s literacy levels as compared to the control group and a post-measurement increase
for the experimental group as compared to the pre-measurement, which is in line with
previous research. Before the implementation of the intervention, it appeared that the
level of literacy was good, which is in line with the findings of other surveys. In addition,
women were found to have a higher level of Mental Health Literacy after the intervention
than men. In addition, gender is associated with Mental Health Literacy. Findings
indicated that the teachers from Trikala showed a higher level of Literacy regarding
Mental Health compared to the teachers from Athens, which may be due to increased
motivation for the teachers from Trikala to participate in interventions due to the intense
stigma towards mental health observed in rural areas. Finally, multiple regression
analysis suggested that teachers' level of Mental Disorder Recognition, Information about
Help-Seeking, and Mental Illness Attitudes can predict Literacy.
