Educational work self-evaluation and teachers’ professional development
Summary:
The planning and evaluation of educational work is a steady repetitive process to produce usable knowledge, in order to improve the quality of educational systems in the broader socio-economic context. When it carried out through self-evaluation, it potentially creates appropriate conditions for the change of teachers' professionalism, according to the new educational paradigm shaped by the Knowledge society. The school unit evolves into a learning community that develops teachers’ competences to monitor educational changes, under the guidance of “collegial” forms of leadership. Two issues, therefore, are explored in the present paper: firstly, the procedures of self-evaluation of the educational work that contribute to the emergence of new educational subjects and the leadership role by which they are influenced. Secondly, teachers’ attitude towards change, since personal factors, as they are reflected in their predispositions, affect the educational process. The relevant research questions are examined through the views of secondary education teachers via the implementation of quantitative research. The results show that the professional development of this sample is determined by participation in democratic decision-making and action plans, cooperation based on values, partial implementation of collaborative practices and limited contribution to the forging of links with the broader community. Teachers consider ethical commitment to students, reflection on educational practices and interdisciplinary approach to teaching as basic predispositions, while ethical commitment, cooperation and a positive attitude towards research and lifelong learning emerged from the self-evaluation procedure. The statistical analysis confirms the positive correlation of the self-evaluation of the educational work and the professional development of the teachers with the contribution of a more participative form of leadership.
