Original Title:
Religious Associations in Ptolemaic Egypt: The Evidence in the Greek Language
Translated title:
Religious Associations in Ptolemaic Egypt: The Evidence in the Greek Language
Summary:
The current thesis aims to study and document all epigraphical and papyrological sources in the Greek language concerning religious associations in Ptolemaic Egypt from the period that follows the death of Alexander III until 31 BC. The current thesis comprises of three parts: the introduction, the main part that is divided into two subparts and the appendix with the epigraphical and papyrological sources. In the part of the introduction, some key ideas about the subject are analysed and followed by a brief overview of the history of the research on the subject and lastly by a presentation of the policy of the Ptolemies on religious matters and their stance towards the native population.
In the first subpart of the main part I have presented the different association based on the deity worshipped and I have provided some information on the deity. In the second subpart the various issues that concern the associations and their functions are analysed more thoroughly (e.g. internal organization or financial issues), while special emphasis is placed on the membership basis of the associations as it can help determine the identity of an association. Throughout the current thesis emphasis has also been placed on the subject of the coexistence of Greeks and Egyptians and the intermingling of their cultures and religions, while sources written in demotic have also been taken into consideration.
