Sex education needs assessment in secondary school
Summary:
This dissertation was conducted so that the opinions of adolescents about their sexual and reproductive health can be heard, as urged by international humanitarian organizations that focus on this issue as well.
The purpose of the research was to highlight the needs of secondary school students in matters of sexual and reproductive health, to explore the methods they consider appropriate for the realization of the subject in school and highlight the who would be suitable for the approach of the subject.
It’s a cross sectional quantitative study carried out in 2020. The data were collected through an online questionnaire developed by the interdisciplinary team. The sample was collected through Secondary schools in Attica that agreed to participate as well as through invitation to relevant social networks of parents and teachers. The main criterion for the student’s participation was the informed consent of the parent and the attendance at a high school in the Attica region. The research was approved by the Institute of Educational Policy of the Ministry of Education and Religions.
The final sample consisted of 300 students with an average age of 14, 51.64% were girls, 56.25% stated that the educational level of the first parent is higher education. The majority of participants (81.25%) stated that there has been no Sex Education in the school they attend. Of the other students who stated that there has been some kind of information within the school, 33.33% stated that it concerned the issues of family planning, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases, 31.37% reproduction and 27.45% adolescence and sexuality issues. Of the participating students 58.82% consider that students in Greece have no information about sexual health and 23.53% that they have average information. One in four students said they didn’t know about contraceptive methods. In a categorized open-ended question, 32% of the students said they would like more sexual and reproductive health issues to be discussed and 32% said they would like to discuss everything that could be included in a sex education program. Of the participants 10% expressed the desire to further analyze the issue of respect and healthy relationships and 8% would like to see further analysis of the issue of sexual orientation and gender expression. When asked who would be more appropriate to teach the subject of sex education in order of preference are listed the experts in sexual health (39.22%), mental health experts (21.57%) and teachers (19.61%). Finally, 61.25% have not visited a health professional for advice on sexual health issues. The results were collected with key demographic independent variables.
Despite the limitation of the representativeness of the sample, which was also affected by the current conditions of the pandemic, the present study records the absence or insufficient conduct of sex education in schools today, which contradicts the needs and concerns expressed by teens themselves in their answers.
