The role of hyperthermia in breast cancer
Summary:
INTRODUCTION: Neoplasmatic breast disease is the most common cancer found in the female population. Its main treatment includes surgical resection, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In recent years, a new method has been added, that of hyperthermia therapy (HT): the heating of tumors to 40-45oC. HT is a known radiotherapy and chemotherapy sensitizer of tumors.
PURPOSE: The investigation of the role of HT in breast cancer patients, the study and recording of the factors that contribute to its most efficient application for a better clinical outcome and the investigation of possible adverse events.
METHODS: This systematic review is based on a search in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Ingenta Connect, CINAHL and Scopus databases, using relevant terms as keywords, for 2009-2020.
RESULTS: In total 24 articles are included. The analysis of the individual studies shows an increase in the rates of clinical response and local control of the tumor, longer duration of local control and overall survival and the appearance of thermal toxicity.
CONCLUSIONS: The combined treatment of HT with the standard treatments induces better clinical results in patients with breast cancer. At the same time, it seems that the temperature and heat dose applied during treatment, have significant influence on clinical outcome, local control, overall survival and toxicity due to HT. However, significant limitations do not allow safe conclusions to be drawn and further studies are needed to be held in the future.
